Good question Lane! Sea Foam works great to liquefy and clean away the varnish that causes restrictions in carburetor passageways. Sea Foam virtually melts the sticky varnish buildup back into fluid so all the old residue burns away with the fuel. Cleaning instructions are the same for all 2- and 4-stroke gasoline carburetors!
Here’s how to do it:
Add at least 8 ounces of Sea Foam to a low amount of fresh fuel in your 4-wheeler tank – try to be around 3 or 4 parts gasoline to 1 part Sea Foam.
Start the engine and let it idle for 8 or so minutes to allow the Sea Foam mixture to flow through the carburetor circuits, then shut off the engine. [If an engine does not run or won’t idle, remove spark plugs and crank or rope pull the engine several times to draw the concentration through the carburetor circuits.]
Let the engine sit to soak for several hours. Overnight is great, or soak up to three days if you have the time.
Run the engine after the soak period. Once the engine has idled for at least 5 minutes, add more fresh gasoline and let it idle for another 5 minutes. Then operate as normal – more engine compression and heat will increase the rate of cleaning.
Any engine that suffered from varnish buildup should run noticeably better, while the remaining Sea Foam in the tank will continue to clean as you go!
