Can I fill a marine fuel filter with Marine PRO to clean the engine after it’s been sitting with a 1988 OMC 4.3 L? [SOLVED]
Hi, just wanted to double check and make sure I am reading the recommendation correctly.
It’s ok to fill the main spin on fuel filter with 100 percent marine sea foam pro to perform a deep clean of the fuel system ?
The engine will start and run with Sea Foam alone before the fresh fuel is mixed in with it ?
I’ll be performing this on a 1988 OMC 4.3 L marine engine that has been setting for a few years.
Thanks, Mark
Hi Mark,
Thanks for the question!
Yes, that’s a great way to perform a deep cleaning on an engine that has been sitting.
Here’s what I’d do:
• Add Marine PRO to the fuel tank at a cleaning concentration (at least 2 oz per gallon of fuel). It’s best if the tank is relatively low to maximize the treatment concentration.
• Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature, then shut it off.
• Remove the old fuel filter and install a new one filled about 3/4 full with Marine PRO.
• Start the engine and let it idle for about 5 minutes to pull the high concentration of Marine PRO through the fuel system.
• Shut the engine off and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
• Restart the engine and run or operate it for at least another 10 minutes.
Fuel gum and varnish is the #1 cause of many fuel-related performance problems in marine engines that have been sitting. The high concentration of Marine PRO works very well to liquefy and clear away those deposits.
