Do I have to change oil after adding Sea Foam for lifter noise? [SOLVED]
1 Answers
I literally just changed my oil 50 miles ago, but I still have some rattling lifters or something going on in there and I would like to treat it. Can I put the Sea Foam in and just keep an eye on the oil and change it when it’s time to change it or does it have to be changed immediately after? Obviously, if it helps the rattling, I can go ahead and change it because it means it broke something loose but if you don’t, I don’t wanna spend any extra money on the oil if I don’t have to.

Thanks for the question!
First, I’d check out this page on our site about lifter noise: https://seafoamworks.com/how-to-fix-lifter-noise-with-sea-foam/
If the lifter noise is caused by sticky oil varnish, Sea Foam will help clean it up, though it may take a few oil changes with Sea Foam added to each batch of oil. (note: don’t exceed 1 oz of Sea Foam per quart of oil in the crankcase). If the Sea Foam doesn’t help, you can take it to a mechanic to see if something else is causing the noise.
To answer your question about Sea Foam, you can leave the Sea Foam in there for the life of the oil (until your next regularly scheduled oil change). It dissolves oil residues and deposits back into liquid form so they can be drained away when you change the oil. It won’t break off anything that would cause harm.
