How to get a motorcycle started that’s been sitting for ten years [SOLVED]
I have a motorcycle that has sat for 10 years and about 5 years ago the fluids were drained. I am wondering what Sea Foam product would work best to get it cleaned up and running again?
Thanks for the question, Heather. Here’s a (rather comprehensive) answer for a full Sea Foam treatment…
Start by removing all spark plugs and introduce Sea Foam Spray in short 1-2 second bursts per cylinder 3-4 times. Let the engine sit for 3-4 hours. Add more Sea Foam Spray to each cylinder and slowly turn the engine over by hand. One the engine is turning over freely, reinstall or replace the spark plugs and change the engine oil and filter. Add 1 ounce of Sea Foam Motor Treatment per quart of engine oil to the fresh oil.
At the same time, use a 50/50 mixture of Sea Foam and fresh gasoline in the fuel tank to dissolve any varnish residues that had built up in the first 5 years. Add Sea Foam mixed fuel to tank and let it sit (I suggest in direct sunlight) for 12-24 hours. Then, drain the tank and dispose of fuel mixture properly.
Once the tank is clean, add a whole can of Sea Foam Motor Treatment or High Mileage to a full tank of fuel. And start the motorcycle. If the engine does not want to start, let the engine sit for 1-2 hours to allow Sea Foam to dissolve any contamination in the carb(s) and attempt to start again. If it will not start still, let it sit for another 1-2 hours.
I’d recommend using a strong Sea Foam mixture in the fuel for a minimum of 2-3 full tanks. In the future, add 1 ounce of Sea Foam Motor Treatment or High Mileage to each tank of fuel, as this will alleviate any concern about letting the motorcycle sit in the off season or times of limited use.
