SUMMARY
Sea Foam Motor Treatment can be used in every type of gasoline or diesel engine. When added to an engine’s oil crankcase, Sea Foam Motor Treatment works to clean and liquefy heavier oil deposits, so the residues will drain away when the oil is changed. Sea Foam cleans internal engine parts, prevents sludge and other harmful oil formations.

How often can I use Sea Foam gas and oil treatment in my 2003 Chevy S10?
Good question, William. As far as safety goes, you can add Sea Foam to your gas tank as often as you’d like. Adding a can to your gas tank every 3,000 miles (or 2-4 times a year) is enough to keep your fuel system clean and running strong. I’d also consider using High Mileage – it’s a strong cleaner and works great on vehicles with higher mileage.
Another tip: wait until the tank is low (1/4 -1/8 tank), and add the whole 16 oz can. Then, drive until almost empty before refueling. A high concentration like that works very well for cleaning fuel residues and deposits.
You can add Sea Foam to the oil before every oil change. However, do not exceed one treatment per oil interval, and never add more than 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of oil. Adding Sea Foam before every oil change will work great to progressively clean away oil residues and deposits.
Can I add Sea Foam to my engine oil?
Thanks for the question! Here are the Sea Foam products that you can add to your oil:
- Sea Foam Motor Treatment (SF16 – the classic red and white can)
- Truck & SUV Motor Treatment (SF20 – a 20oz size of Sea Foam Motor Treatment)
- High Mileage Motor Treatment (HM16 – a black and silver can, formulated for treating stubborn oil residues in higher-mileage engines)
Here’s more info on using Sea Foam Motor Treatment in your oil. You can follow these instructions for any of the products above.

I have 20,000 miles on my new Honda Ridgeline. When can I start using Sea Foam?
Good question, John. There are two common reasons people use Sea Foam in a vehicle: to solve a problem, or as preventative maintenance. Sea Foam cleans fuel residues and deposits, which are often the cause of common engine problems (like rough idle, loss of power, loss of fuel efficiency, etc.).
In a newer vehicle, you can use Sea Foam as preventative maintenance to clean and prevent any fuel residues or deposits from forming. Adding a can every 3-5,000 miles will go a long ways to keep the fuel system clean and stay ahead of any problems. As a cleaner/preventative maintenance, you can start using Sea Foam whenever you’d like on a new vehicle.
You can also use it in your oil as preventative maintenance. Add 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of oil around 100-300 miles before you change it. That will reliquefy any oil residues or deposits and allow them to be drained away when you change your oil.
Hope that helps and let me know if there’s anything else!
Will Sea Foam work on sticking lifters in a 2013 GMC Yukon Denali?
Thanks for the question! Lifter noise (sticky lifters) can be resolved by using Sea Foam Motor Treatment in the oil crankcase. Sometime the lifter noise goes away quickly, but most of the time requires regular treatments (every oil interval). The big benefit to every interval is to progressively clean away all the old oil residue that builds up as engines add miles. Keep adding Sea Foam (or High Mileage) to your oil! We recommend adding 100 to 300 drive miles before each oil change interval. Add 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of oil.
I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado, with 58000 miles on it. It has a 6 qt capacity oil crank case. How long could I run 3 oz of regular Sea Foam in it? Can I go the full 3000 miles? Or do I have to change out that fresh oil in 300 miles? ( I added the Sea Foam to fresh mobile 1-5w30 dex.)
Thanks for the question, Joe. You can run it for the full 3,000 miles (until your next regularly scheduled oil change). It’s safe to leave in there for the life of the oil. One note: on the can, we recommend adding it 100-300 miles before you change your oil. That way the Sea Foam has time to circulate and clean, and the reliquefied oil residues can be drained away when you change your oil. You can certainly leave it in there for the full 3,000 miles, though.
For a 6qt capacity crankcase, we recommend 1 oz of Sea Foam per quart of oil. With 3 ounces already in the crankcase, I’d recommend adding an additional 3 ounces to bring it up to 6 ounces total.
