SUMMARY
Pour Sea Foam in your fuel tank to clean and lubricate your entire fuel system. It works through fuel injectors and carburetors to remove harmful residues and deposits from fuel passageways, intake valves, pistons, and chamber areas.
For cleaning a gasoline or diesel fuel system, it’s safe to add more Sea Foam to fuel. In fact, the more Sea Foam you add to fuel, the better it cleans!
Made from petroleum ingredients, Sea Foam is safe and effective when used in all types of gasoline or diesel fuels and fuel blends. Sea Foam does NOT contain harsh detergent or abrasive chemicals that can harm your engine or fuel system components.

Can you put too much in your vehicle? Will too much hurt a vehicle?
Thanks for the question, Vern. Sea Foam Motor Treatment is made with 100% safe petroleum cleaning and lubricating ingredients. You can safely add a large amount of Sea Foam to your gas tank – there’s no such thing as “too much.” In fact, a high concentration of Sea Foam in the fuel tank works better and faster to clean than a low concentration. I like to wait until the tank is low (1/4 -1/8 tank), add the whole 16 oz can, and then drive for at least 10-20 miles before refueling. It’s safe to add a high concentration like that and it works very well for cleaning fuel residues and deposits.
In the oil, do not exceed 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of oil.
I have a 74 dodge truck with a 318 small block V8 that’s carbureted. Should I use the whole can since its a bigger engine?
Good question, Tyler.
For Sea Foam in the gas tank, yes, you can use the whole can. Adding a whole can to the gas tank is a great way to clean up the entire fuel system. I like to wait until the tank is low (1/4 -1/8 tank), add the whole 16 oz can, and then drive for at least 10-20 miles before refueling. It’s safe to add a high concentration like that and it works very well for cleaning fuel residues and deposits.
In the oil, add 1 oz of Sea Foam per quart of oil. Do not exceed that ratio.
How much Sea Foam per gallons of gasoline?
Thanks for the question, Blaine! Here’s an overview. It depends why you’re using it:
- For preventative maintenance/fuel storage: 1 oz per gallon
- For fuel system cleaning/overcoming a fuel-related engine problem: 2 or more ounces per gallon. To maximize cleaning, add a full can (16 oz) to a low tank (2-3 gallons) and drive until almost empty before refueling.
How long to drive once Sea Foam is added to a quarter tank of gas?
My ’04 Nissan Titan has been sitting since before winter waiting on a brake job to be finished. I’m worried about the gas in it. I was told I could have some Sea Foam to it and it would help stabilize it and help minimize any broken down products from clogging up my fuel system. Do you think I can add it to the gas that’s already in there and run it?
Good question. If it’s been sitting since last fall or so, the fuel should have enough volatility to start and run just fine. However, Sea Foam won’t “restore” fuel volatility. It will help prevent any further breakdown, as well as reliquefy any fuel residues and varnish that have formed in the tank.
If you can drive it, here’s what I would do: I would drive it until almost empty, then add a can or two of Sea Foam with two gallons of fresh fuel. Then, drive the truck for at least 20 miles before refueling. That way you have the old gas purged out, followed by a high concentration of Sea Foam working through the fuel system to clean away any gum/varnish residue that would have formed while the truck sat.
If it’s going to be sitting for a while longer, go ahead and add a can of Sea Foam, and then follow the above when it’s ready to go.
Note: High Mileage Motor Treatment would be a good option too. It’s a strong cleaning formula for higher-mileage vehicles.
