SUMMARY
Pour Sea Foam in your fuel tank to clean and lubricate your entire fuel system. It works through fuel injectors and carburetors to remove harmful residues and deposits from fuel passageways, intake valves, pistons, and chamber areas.
For cleaning a gasoline or diesel fuel system, it’s safe to add more Sea Foam to fuel. In fact, the more Sea Foam you add to fuel, the better it cleans!
Made from petroleum ingredients, Sea Foam is safe and effective when used in all types of gasoline or diesel fuels and fuel blends. Sea Foam does NOT contain harsh detergent or abrasive chemicals that can harm your engine or fuel system components.

Would it be best to add Sea Foam when engine is cold or after driving it awhile to warm-up engine temperature?
Thanks for the question!
For Sea Foam in the gas tank or oil crankcase, it does not matter if the engine is hot or cold. In the gas tank, Sea Foam will clean and lubricate as the treated fuel is drawn through the fuel system. In the oil crankcase, the Sea Foam will circulate and clean as the engine runs.
The best time to add Sea Foam to the gas is when you’ve got about 1/4-1/8 of a tank left. Add an entire 16 oz can, drive until it’s almost empty, and then refuel as normal. The high concentration works very well to clean.
The best time to add Sea Foam is 100-300 miles before your next oil change. That gives the Sea Foam enough time to circulate and clean, and it allows all the reliquefied oil residues to be drained away with the old oil. Add 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of oil.
Can Sea Foam be used in a 2020 Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder?
Thanks for the question! Yes, any Sea Foam product can be used in your 2020 Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder.
Just follow the instructions on the can.
Here’s a little more info on how to use Sea Foam Motor Treatment:
- Sea Foam Motor Treatment in fuel. I like to wait until the tank is low (1/4 -1/8 tank), add the whole 16 oz can, and then drive for at least 10-20 miles before refueling. It’s safe to add a high concentration like that and it works very well for cleaning fuel residues and deposits.
- Sea Foam Motor Treatment in oil. Add 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of oil in the crankcase. We recommend adding it 100-300 miles before your next oil change. That gives the Sea Foam enough time to circulate and clean, and it allows all the reliquefied oil residues to be drained away with the old oil.

Can I add Seam Foam to nearly empty tank, fill it with fuel and then only drive it for 1 mile and let it sit?
Thanks for the question!
The best way to get the most cleaning power out of a can of Sea Foam is to create a high concentration of Sea Foam in your gas tank.
I like to wait until the tank is low (1/4 -1/8 tank), add the whole 16 oz can, and then drive for at least 10-20 miles before refueling. It’s safe to add a high concentration like that and it works very well for cleaning fuel residues and deposits.
Doing that about every 3,000 miles is a great way to keep everything clean and running as best it can.

We have old gas in our classic cars from 1931 to 1958. Should I drain the old gas out? Will Sea Foam work in new gas after draining old gas?
Great question, Dannie. Yes, the best case scenario is to drain as much of the old fuel as you can, and then add Sea Foam to fresh fuel and drive it for a while.
Here’s a snippet with instructions from an article about vehicles that haven’t been run in a while:
“Gummy varnish and deposits are a common cause of problems like rough idle, loss of power, or poor fuel efficiency in a car that’s been sitting. Adding a high concentration of Sea Foam Motor Treatment or Sea Foam High Mileage to the fuel tank is an easy way to clean fuel residues and deposits from the entire fuel system. If your engine has been sitting for a long time, here are three steps to get it cleaned up and running well again with Sea Foam:
- Start by draining or syphoning the old fuel from the tank.
- Add 2-3 gallons of fresh fuel and a can of Sea Foam High Mileage to the fuel tank. If you can’t drain all the fuel, you’ll still want to add some fresh fuel to bring back fuel volatility.
- Drive until almost empty (at least twenty miles if possible) before refueling with fresh fuel.”
The Sea Foam will help clean up any gum or varnish that formed while sitting.
